Grasping the work boot firmly, Weston Kay feeds it through the bandsaw. The blades make quick work of it, a high-pitched buzzing sound filling the shop as they tear through the boot. Kay transfers the halved boot to his workbench, eager to rip the layers apart and get a closer look at what’s inside.

Kay owns the handmade leather goods shop Rose Anvil, but he’s equally well known for his YouTube channel of the same name, where he films in-depth reviews of leather work boots. In a world rife with marketing claims and buzz words, Kay’s seal of integrity is that he stays focused on the facts. Through his videos, he uses his years of experience and skill with leather to honestly evaluate work boots of every type and price point. His mission is to provide as much transparency as possible and expose the truth about the boots American workers rely on every day.

PROVE THEM WRONG

Leather chose Kay early on. Throughout his childhood on a hard-working farm in rural Utah, leather was the fabric of his daily life. Over time, Kay developed a unique respect for the material that would become the backbone of his craft.

“I was raised blue collar, doing construction and farm work, so I was always around tools, saddles, horse tack,” Kay explains. “Leather’s expensive, so my grandpa taught me to appreciate it, to condition it, to maintain it. He taught me that if you take care of it, it will last a long time.”

Kay started hand-making leather pieces in his college dorm with inherited tools, and he soon saw his hobby’s full potential. He resolved to give leather work a real shot, but he was met with resistance from teachers, mentors, and even his own parents.

“They didn’t think I could make leather a career. That put a chip on my shoulder, and it’s part of what drives me,” Kay admits. “I decided to prove everyone wrong. The way I was raised, we worked for what we got. I set out to make my dream a reality through blood, sweat, and tears.”

REVEAL THE TRUTH

Kay’s review channel began as a way to learn more about footwear construction and share his opinion on leather quality, but Kay quickly realized he could level up his boot testing methods to make his reviews even more useful for his audience. He also knew that the more in-depth information he could give, the more trust he would grow in his channel.

“We want our reviews to provide real utility,” Kay says. “How puncture resistant is the boot? How abrasion resistant? How waterproof? What kind of leather is used? We use these tests to answer whether the boot is good quality for the price.”

As for sawing boots in half, Kay was inspired by the tradition of cobblers showcasing their goods to prove their worth and applied this principle to a video format. It has become his trademark. “People think I came up with this crazy idea, but it’s only what the top bootmakers have done for hundreds of years to show customers exactly what they’re buying,” Kay says.

Kay prides himself on thorough reviews. If a brand is cutting corners and trying to take advantage of consumers with lesser products, he’s going to find proof and call them out on it. Kay’s approach is driven by a commitment to share the whole truth, good or bad, so that the people who need work boots the most can make the decision that’s right for them.

“The blue collar workforce is the foundation of our country, and for them, work boots are a key piece of equipment,” Kay says. “The best way I can find out if a boot is good quality or not is to destroy it and see what’s on the inside.”

KEEP YOUR WORD

The foundation of Rose Anvil is honesty. Kay doesn’t pull any punches when he reviews leather, no matter whether it’s a decades-old heritage brand or the new hype product. He doesn’t care if that makes him unpopular or earns him a few enemies. All he cares about is getting to the truth, a lifelong value instilled in him by his father.

“My dad taught me that your word is everything,” Kay says. “You could have anything in the world and that can all go away. The only thing you actually have is your word. Keeping my word is the core of my work ethic. It's takes work to be open, to tell those hard truths.”

As Rose Anvil has grown and taken on more professional partnerships, they’ve brought expectations and new challenges. In the face of tough decisions, Kay’s commitment to integrity is what keeps him accountable.

“It’s happened that a brand has offered me a lot of money, and it makes you feel like you can’t talk honestly about it. I hear my dad’s voice say—Weston, your word is everything. That's all that matters. That solves any problem for me. I just have to tell the truth.”

FACE IT HEAD ON

With raw honesty comes criticism. Viewers of Rose Anvil criticize everything from Kay’s experience to his testing approach. Sometimes his take on popular products can land him into controversial territory, especially if the brand has a loyal following. Instead of setting him back, Kay finds the criticism fuels him.

“I have a folder on my phone with screenshots of the trash talk I get online, saying things like ‘this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.’ Every once in a while, when I need some motivation, I'll read those. It works,” Kay says.

It’s not just the online haters that Kay deals with. More than once, brands have hit Kay with cease-and-desist letters, unhappy with his frank reviews. It doesn’t faze him. If a boot is truly of good quality, he knows that will come out in his review. Kay faces each challenge secure in the knowledge that his reviews are rooted in the facts.

"We're very disruptive because we tell the truth,” Kay says. “Even if I'm wrong, we can still tell the truth. And if we're right, we will end up on top. I believe in what we do. People threaten to come after us and I say, bring it on. We tell the truth here.”

MAKE A LASTING IMPACT

Even though Kay and Rose Anvil’s audience reaches a wide range of people with millions of views across his videos, Kay feels the greatest satisfaction knowing his reviews have helped real-life blue collar workers in a tangible way. He finds that whenever someone recognizes and approaches in public, it’s usually someone from the blue collar community.

“I think we’ve made a big impact,” Kay says. “People come up to me and tell me they’re huge fans of the channel and how it's made a difference in their life. I’m proud of that. Without our blue collar workers, there is no country. They deserve to have champions in the footwear space.”

Kay is determined to continue being one of those champions by sticking to the same core principles that shaped him before Rose Anvil ever existed. Honesty, integrity, and a dedication to putting in the work until the facts speak for themselves.
